Everything Bernie Lootz (William H. Macy) touches turns sour, particularly a past gambling habit that has left him seriously in debt to Shelly Kaplow (Alec Baldwin), a violent old-school wise guy who runs the Shangri-La Casino. Having realised the potential of Bernie's seemingly contagious bad luck, Shelly hires him as the casino's "cooler", so called because he can cool down a gambler's hot winning streak just by standing nearby. But with his debt almost paid, Bernie is planning on leaving Vegas to start a new life. Shelly, however, doesn't want to lose his most valuable asset, especially as the Casino's Mob investors are pressuring him into upgrading the joint into a family-friendly operation. Complicating matters is Natalie (Maria Bello), a feisty cocktail waitress with whom Bernie becomes involved. Genuinely happy for the first time in years, and with his own Lady Luck by his side, Bernie's cooling powers appear to be reversing. But has his luck really changed? And will he manage to break away from Vegas and get the girl? Not if Shelly Kaplow has anything to do with it.
