Robert Wise's powerful I Want To Live is based on a true story of Barbara Gramham (an Oscar-winning Susan Hayward), executed for a crime she allegedly did not commit. So gruelling were the gas chambers scenes considered originally, they were cut entirely from the British cinema release, despite an 'X' certificate. The screenplay by Nelsom Gidding and Don Mankiewiez was based on actual newspaper reports and letters from Barbara Graham, adding a chilling sense of realism to this superb film.
