Germany, 1989: Although sill a divided nation, revolution is on the march. Alex, bored and disaffected by his homeland, lives in communist East Berlin with his sister and mother, Christiane. A staunch, socialist activist ever since her husband abandoned her the children to escape to the West, Christiane collapses into a coma days before the Berlin Wall comes down. When she awakens 8 months later, Germany is reunited and capitalism has triumphed. So, when the doctors tell Alex his fragile mother's life will be at risk if she becomes excited or upset, he decides to conceal from her the biggest news of the late 20th Century. Not to mention that his sister now works at the local Burger King! Mounting an elaborate plan to convince her that nothing has changed, he recreates East Germany in her bedroom. The strain of it all is at once hilarious and deeply poignant.
