Lucia is a young waitress who lives and works in Madrid. When she hears of the death of her long-time writer boyfriend Lorenzo, she seeks refuge on a quiet, secluded Mediterranean island. There, bathed in an atmosphere of fresh air and dazzling sun, Lucia begins to discover the dark corners of her past relationship, as if they were forbidden passages of a novel which the author now, from afar, allows her to read. Erotically charged and deliciously intricate, this enigmatic and sensuous film beautifully explores themes of love, loss, sex and the peculiarities of fate. Julio Medem's Sex and Lucia begins where his previous film, Lovers of the Arctic Circle, left off. The storyline is deliberately reversed and Lucia's fight is not towards death, but towards life, showing Medem's impeccable talent for story-telling and artistic direction. Sex and Lucia is proof that Julio Medem is one of the leading figures in contemporary Spanish cinema.
