Somalia, October 1993. Stationed outside the capital Mogadishu, a group of U.S. Special Forces are present as part of a United Nations peace keeping force. Food supplies and aid for the starving population are often seized by the army of ruling warlord Mohammad Farrah Aidid, who has proved elusive to the U.S forces. Intent on toppling his rule, Major General William Garrison (Sam Shepard) is content for now with planning to seize Aidid's lieutenants. It's with this intention that he sends a squad of Rangers and Delta commandos deep into hostile territory in Mogadishu, but his best laid plans go awry when the troops find themselves engaged in a hellish shooting match. With its harrowing, state-of-the-art depiction of combat, Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down stands as one of the most visceral and frightening portraits of what it's like to be caught up in a war situation.
