Two beautiful women Maggie (Karen Dwyer) and Kim (Christina Cox) meet in Vancouver and fall in love. After a passionate romance they decide to move in together and live in an open lesbian relationship. Well, open to all except Maggie's mother, Lila, who is in the process of getting divorced and has just decided to move to Vancouver to stay with her daughter. Once there, and none the wiser to Maggie and Kym's relationship, she meets Judy, a transsexual about to undergo a sex-change operation. Soon Lila's naivety can no longer be maintained, and she has her eyes opened regarding Maggie and Kym's relationship and the diversity of their group of friends. Better Than Chocolate is a coming of age film with a twist.
