Bringing Out The Dead

synopsis

The fantastic cast of Nicholas Cage, Patricia Arquette and John Goodman (to only name a few) come together in 'Bringing out the Dead', Scorsese's story of rebirth. The audience follows Frank, a burnt out ambulance medic who is haunted at every turn by the people whose lives he couldn't save. We follow him over three nights, when he is joined by a new partner each night: Larry, who can only thinks about his dinner, Marcus, a religious man, and Tom, who goes to strange lengths not to let work get slow. The story unfolds as Frank develops a friendship with Mary, an ex-junkie and the daughter of one of his patients, and it becomes obvious that despite his efforts to get fired, he cannot quit the job on his own. The relationship between Mary and Frank becomes the emotional center of the film, while Frank's relationship to his work and co-workers propel the film forward. This is an essential film for Scorsese fans, as we see the director attempting a film that does not have a conventional 'story-line' but moreover attempts to provide an insight, or a snapshot, of the life of a complex man on brink of spiritual collapse and redemption.
