On her wedding Day, Eileen along with her younger brother and sister, remembers her overbearing father with mixed feelings of regret and compassion. The recollections of this domineering and irrational man are played against music and radio programmes of the period to create an evocative and moving picture of family life in the 1940's. Featuring the music of Ella Fitzgerald, Jessye Norman, Vaughan Williams, Charlie Chaplin and others. Written and directed by Terence Davies ('The Long Day Closes'), 'Distant Voices, Still Lives' won the Best Film award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1988 and was awarded the Golden Leopard for best film at Locarno that same year. "An extraordinary and wonderful piece of work" - The Independent "An out and out masterpiece" - Films And Filming "The best British film in a decade" - Time Out
