Summertime has come to Wabasha, Minnesota, and everything is thawing. Even the decades-old battle between John Gustafson (Jack Lemmon) and Max Goldman (Walter Matthau) has mellowed. For with John now married to Ariel (Ann-Margret), Max is left without an enemy. Until she comes to town. Maria Ragetti (Sophia Loren), is to turn Chuck's legendary bait store into a romantic Italian restaurant - a plan which makes John and Max crankier and grumpier than ever before! But Maria has no intention of surrendering. And as she matches them insult-for-insult, prank-for-prank, so it looks as if she's about to win a lot more than just the war...!
