When bookish, naive student Stanley Windrush (Ian Carmichael) interrupts his college education to serve his country things don't quite go according to plan. After flunking out of officer's candidate school and being demoted to private, Stanley is confronted by the cruder, ruder side of army life represented by Private Cox (Richard Attenborough). After learning the ropes Stanley's platoon is sent on a secret mission to "liberate" looted art treasures from a castle in the countryside behind Nazi lines: led by aloof Major Hitchcock (Terry-Thomas) and commanding officer Bertram Tracepurcel (Dennis Price) this special platoon embark on some classic comedy manoeuvres. One of the Boulting Brothers' biggest box-office hits, Private's Progress also stars William Hartnell and Christopher Lee.
