A classy adaptation of Gustave Flaubert's novel, directed by the great Claude Chabrol. In 19th century France, Emma Rouault (Isabelle Huppert), the daughter of a country squire, has visions of a romantic life, but she is sadly disillusioned by her marriage to Charles Bovary (Jean-Francois Balmer), a dull country doctor. To escape boredom she throws herself into love affairs with suave local landowner Rodolphe Boulanger (Christophe Malavoy), and Leon Dupuis (Lucas Belvaux), a young law student. She also runs up ruinous debts, turning her life into a nightmare of despair.
