Bullets Over Broadway

synopsis

Big city mobsters and the Broadway stage collide hilariously in this side-splitting, all-star comedy from Woody Allen that had audiences and critics rolling in the aisles. David Shayne (John Cusack), an idealistic young writer, will do anything to get his first Broadway play of the ground - even if it means teaming up with the mob. Surrounded by a host of wacky characters, including a tipsy actress (Oscar-winner Dianne Wiest), a gangster's ditzy girlfriend (Jennifer Tilly) and a mob hit man (Chazz Palminteri), Shayne's got to pull it all off before the curtain falls and the bullets start to fly.

Like his early funny films.

This Woody Allen film is Woody doing his best with dialogue. The characters are all interesting and the exchanges are vintage Allen humour. I could imagine Woody sitting up in bed having a great time developing the repartee and chuckling to himself as each situation and the attendant jokes unfolded. The actors must have had a great time learning their parts and making Allen's script come alive with his humour. Pity that Woody didn't make a cameo appearance but you can't have everything. If you liked Woody's early funny films you'll love this one - Allen doing what he does best - lengthy rants and lots of jokes. 4 stars
