It is 22 years since Alexander turned his back on the family farm in Australia and, leaving behind his young daughter Sally, set sail for England. Now he's back – a distinguished writer with a beautiful new bride, Deborah. Sally and her Uncle have been running the farm in his absence and supporting his decadent lifestyle. Hard working people, they are not impressed by the airs and graces of these city folk, but in time Alexander's lovely wife enflames the rivalrous affections of both Uncle Jack and the local doctor. Slowly, secretly, new bonds are forged and old ties severed as a tangled web of relationships threatens to transform country life for better, for worse... forever.
