An Australian Easy Rider, Stone is a wild combination of biker movie, gore flick, whodunit, action film and remains the best known Australian cult exploitation film of the 70s. Writer, producer and director Sandy Harbutt also stars, giving a ferocious performance as the Grave Diggers’ leader, The Undertaker, alongside Hugh Keays-Byrne, who played the chief villain Toecutter in that other classic Aussie road movie, Mad Max. Ken Shorter as Stone is brilliant, while a 19 year-old Rebecca Gilling (Return to Eden) cuts a striking figure as the biker’s mole. The soundtrack is a masterpiece of Australian progressive and pub rock.
