Elle (Isabelle Adjani) is a beautiful, provocative and extremely feisty 19-year-old who returns to the Provencal village where she grew up to care for her crippled father and German mother. Her arrival stirs up the normally sleepy village, and the men folk are mesmerised by the new arrival who is not at all bashful about all the attention. As she gets back into village life, her true personality begins to emerge. She is a brilliant manipulator and turns friend against friend, and brother against brother. As the film draws to a violent conclusion, Elle's secret is discovered, a shattering event that happened nineteen years before. Isabelle Adjani gives one of her best ever performances in Jean Becker's gripping psychological thriller which twists and turns at the mercy of her cunning will. French dialogue with English subtitles.
