Kwaidan

synopsis

Kwaidan is a quartet of compelling Japanese ghost stories based on the writings of Lafcadio Hearn, the 19th century English Orientalist who helped to publicise Janpanese art and culture in the 1890's and early 1900's. Masaki Kobayashi(Harikiri)- one of four outstanding and formative directors to emerge from post war Japan, brings a precise and integral beauty to his work that has rarely been matched, and upon completion of the film in 1964, Kwadian marked the most expensive Japanese prodution to date. Having previously won the 1962 Cannes Film Festival there was little suprise when Kwaidan picked up the Special Jury Prize. Kwadian evokes all the is exquisite about both Japanese art and culture and under the exacting directions of Kobayashi, the results are truly haunting and strangely beautiful.
