Francis Ashby, an Oxford University Professor, ventures into the Swiss Alps for a timely and well earned holiday before his prospective appointment as president of his college. What Ashby in his secure, well ordered life does not expect to face is a mid-life crisis in the chance meeting of two American woman: Miss Caroline Hartley and her 18 year old ward Miss Elinor Hartley. Ashby ultimately finds he enjoys their company which is a refreshing diversion from the masculine world he normally inhabits. However on his return to Oxford he must not only face the fight of a young professor who aspires to the college presidency but also the unannounced arrival in Oxford of Caroline and Elinor Hartley. It is at this moment in his life that he realises that his life is turned upside down by something to which he had not realised he was susceptible – love.
