One of the truly great silent films of the 1920s was The Thief Of Baghdad, directed by Hollywood legend Raoul Walsh. Made in 1924, it features Douglas Fairbanks as producer and also as the star, in the role of the happy-go-lucky Ahmed the Thief. Beguiled by a beautiful Princess, Ahmed must prove himself to be worthier than her other suitor, the villainous Mongol Prince. To this end he must overcome the Valley of Fire, the Vale of Dragons, the Cavern of the Enchanted Trees, the Old Man of the Midnight Sea and the Abode of the Winged Horse. The Thief Of Bagdad remains one of the most imaginative and wondrous of all silent films - a magical Arabian Nights-style adventure that has lived long in the memory of movie lovers and was hugely influential on subsequent films in the fantasy genre.
