Oliver Twist

synopsis

David Lean's atmospheric production remains the definitive version of the Charles Dickens' masterpiece. Orphan Oliver Twist (John Howard Davies) is expelled from the work house where he lives by the miserly Mr.Bumble (Francis L.Sullivan) for daring to ask for more. After an unhappy apprenticeship to an undertaker, Oliver escapes to the foggy streets of London where he falls in with a group of thieves headed by the mercurial Fagin (Alec Guiness) and the Artful Dodger (Anthony Newley). An outstanding cast, which includes Robert Newton as Bill Sykes, Kay Walsh as Nancy, Henry Stephenson as Mr.Brownlow and a young Diana Dors as Charlotte bring Dickens' classic characters excitingly to life. Awards;1948 Oscar Winner for BEST ART DIRECTION, BEST MUSIC and Oscar nominated for BEST PICTURE, BEST FILM EDITING & BEST WRITING Review: "A brilliant, fascinating movie, no less a classic than the Dickens novel it brings to life." - TIME MAGAZINE
