An insight into Australia in the 1950's, whilst portraying the turmoil through the tangled love affairs and business ambitions of two brothers in the news media.
The lives, loves and loyalties of the newsreel cameraman. When the news ran out... they made their own.
Newsfront is the story of the previously unsung newsreel cameramen, who raced to beat deadlines and dangers to capture on film, for a voracious audience of cinemagoers, the historic moments that were shaping a young nation. These were the men who lived and worked in post World War II Australia; a turbulent time with the fear of reds under the beds, the tragic Maitland floods and national pride on show at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. But their days were numbered. A new technology would eventually bring the world into the living room instantly - it was called television.

this movie reminded me of growing up in sydney in the 60s and 70...although the movie is set earlier (between about 1945 and 1956) there was plenty that was still around in the decades after - going to the movies and seeing first the "shorts" including the newsreels.....and the powerful influence of the catholic church in homes and lives. its fasinating seeing the events of those years (45-56) in their original news footage eg the election of menzies, visit by nixon, the maitland flood, cut between the unfolding lives of the newsmen; their idealism and committment seems so quaint now but admirable. if you're over 40, definitely worth watching.....and you get to see bryan brown and gerard kennedy SOooo young.

Very entertaining and keeps up a good pace, plenty of real footage for a taste of nostalgia. Holds up better to a 21st century viewing than I had expected. Recommended for today's youngsters to get a taste of Aussie history.
