"The Birth of the Nation" made in 1914 and released in 1915 was D.W. Griffith's first hollywood epic movie and was number one at the box office for many years. It made Lillian Gish a star and featured Wallace Reed in one of his earliest roles. The dvd appears to have the full length version running 3hrs. and 7 min.. My only gripe is that it is not colour tinted, only in monochrome. The print is beautifully restored and obviously digitally remastered. The added feature of the making of.... is interesting and features scenes from other like minded films, with a coment on the klu klux klan and it's effects on the black population at the time in america. The dvd is a must for all true movie buffs.

So I didn't know this was a propaganda film before I watched it, and am embarrassed to say I was sitting there thinking "I didn't know it happened like that." This is one of the first silent films I have watched and am impressed by its length and cinematography.
