CARO DIARIO (Dear Diary) is a warm, charismatic and intimate semi-autobiographical travelogue by Italian cult director Nanni Moretti. The story is split into three separate tales, all of which beautifully encapsulate Moretti’s penchant for whimsical observations and wry humour. The journey begins with ‘On My Vespa,’ which follows Moretti on a scooter ride around the streets of Rome. The obscure and fortuitous events which ensue are perfectly complemented by Moretti’s erratic commentary. The second story of the triptych, ‘Island’, beautifully tells the all too familiar tale of struggling to find a peaceful place to work, and ‘Doctors’ deals gracefully with Moretti’s frustration towards the physicians responsible for diagnosing and treating his cancer. The film marks the first international release for any of Moretti’s films, and a more appropriate international debut could not have been chosen. Stealing the show at the 1994 New York Film Festival and directly responsible for Moretti winning the Cannes Film Festival Best Director Award in the same year, CARO DIARIO exemplifies the quirky, ironic and playful nature rife in Moretti’s work, which has subsequently thrust him into the spotlight as one of Italy’s leading independent filmmakers.
