The Rules Of The Game (La Regle Du Jeu) (1939) |

Denigrated by the public, vilified by the critics, re-cut at the insistence of its producers, and finally banned by the French government as 'demoralising', La Regle de Jeu was an utter disaster at the time of its original release. Now hailed as one of Renoir's greatest masterpieces it frequently features the world-over in critical Top Tens. On the surface a series of triangular dramas taking place over a country-house weekend, the film is in fact a study in the corruption and decay of a dying social class - if not of a whole society.
