Beyond the Clouds (1995)

synopsis

A labour of love and a rich tapestry to behold, Beyond The Clouds was not only cinema great Michelangelo Antonioni's (Oscar® nominated director of L'Avventura and Blow-Up) first feature film in more than ten years, it is also his final film.

Assisted by longtime friend and filmmaking colleague Wim Wenders (Wings of Desire), Antonioni adapted four of his own short stories to create a haunting and erotically charged ode to love and desire. In the great Italian tradition established in Fellini's 8 1/2, Beyond The Clouds is also linked by a troubled film director (Oscar ® nominee John Malkovich, Burn After Reading) in passionate pursuit of his next project, struggling to overcome the many obsessions that encircle his hectic life. A fascinating meditation on infatuations, infidelities, encounters unresolved and love unrequited are presented with breathtaking imagery and features a remarkable ensemble cast including: Sophie Marceau (Braveheart), Irene Jacob (Three Colour:Red), Fanny Ardant (8 Women), Jean Moreau (Jules and Jim), Marcello Mastroianni (La Dolce Vita), Peter Weller (Robocop), Vincent Perez (Cyrano de Bergerac) and Jean Reno (Leon: The Professional).

Internationally acclaimed winner of the FIPRESCI Award at the Venice Film Festival, featuring original music by U2 and Van Morrison, Beyond The Clouds is a monumental cinematic achievement from a legend who became one of European cinema's most respected filmmakers.
