In the opulent world of Milan's upper class, the Recchi family have it all - wealth, beauty, taste and reputation. Their life is governed by exotic multiple-course meals and discreet staff, by extravagant parties and exclusive labels. When Eduardo Senior, the family patriarch, decides to name a successor to the reigns of his industrial company, he surprises everyone by splitting power between his son Tancredi, and grandson Edo. But Edo dreams of opening a restaurant with his friend Antonio, a handsome and talented chef. When Edo introduces his Russian mother, Emma, to Antonio, sparks fly, and the pair soon embark on an affaire gastronomique, which could spell the fall of this powerful dynasty...
Co-produced by Academy Award winner Tilda Swinton (who learnt Italian, with a Russian accent, for the role of Emma), Luca Guadagnino's sumptuous depiction of turn-of-the-millenium ennui amongst the Italian upper class is one of the delights of contemporary cinema.
