The Edge of Heaven (Auf der anderen Seite) (2 disc set)

synopsis

Directed by Fatih Akin (Head On) and awarded Best Screenplay at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival, The Edge of Heaven is a powerful and thought-provoking meditation on the great divide which exists between different cultures, generations and people.

When Ali, a Turkish immigrant living in Bremen, asks Yeter to move in with him, it causes a rift with his son Nejat, a professor of German studies at a nearby university. But Yeter too is distanced from her daughter Ayten whom she deserted in Turkey when she fled for a better life. Yeter resolves to accept Ali's offer - a decision which sparks a chain reaction of incidents, taking us on a journey from Bremen to Istanbul, and from family to family in a character-driven drama which spirals compellingly towards its stunning finale.

Featuring a powerful performance from the legendary Grand Dame of German Cinema, Hanna Schygulla, The Edge of Heaven is about a father, son, mother, daughter, and the gulf between Germany and Turkey, between the West and Islam, between repentance and forgiveness

A brilliant story and quirky way of telling it. A real feast.

Beautifully photographed, the story is told with images rather than dialogue. Highly recommended, a thoughtful and clever portrayal of family relationships and change. A few twists and turns, not always pleasant but kept me entranced to the end.
