Richard Widmark, Gene Tierney and Googie Withers star in Jules Dassin's Night and the City, a hard-boiled drama boasting all the benchmarks of a classic film noir.
Harry Fabian is a fast-talking hustler who is always on the make. When he happens upon Gregorious, a famous and frustrated Greco-Roman wrestler, Harry seizes the chance to finally get rich quick with a dazzling, daring scheme to hold a top-bill wrestling match. Before long, Harry finds himself a target thanks to his greed, trapped in an unfamiliar city which has morphed into a hellish urban jungle.
Filmed in grimy post-war London, in the era of the Hollywood witch hunts, Dassin's own fears manifest in the cityscape: unfamiliar, dark and menacing, the urban environment becomes as much a threat as the villainous characters, and is testimony to the era's paranoia and underlying viciousness.
