The Merchant of Four Seasons

synopsis

Hans is a born loser. After returning from a year in the Foreign Legion, his aspirations of becoming an engineer cave in to his reality as a humble street fruit peddler, a career choice which upsets both his domineering wife and his middle-class family. Due to his family's lack of respect and blatant criticism of his occupation, Hans is led down the path of alcohol and violence, two vices which threaten to destroy his life as he knows it. Made after Fassbinder first met his idol Douglas Sirk, THE MERCHANT OF FOUR SEASONS draws upon Sirk's method of commenting on society through irony and melodrama. As comical as it is shocking, THE MERCHANT OF FOUR SEASONS cleverly critiques Germany's social mores.
