Lili Marleen

synopsis

Fassbinder's Lili Marleen is an extravagant story of love, war and propaganda in the shadows of Nazi Germany. Willie (Hanna Schygulla) is a German cabaret singer working in Zurich. She is in love with Robert, a Jewish anti-Nazi activist and composer. When Willie's version of Robert's song "Lili Marleen" becomes a hit with the German troops, she becomes synonymous with the song, with the Third Reich and the war effort, feted as a national icon and celebrated even by the Führer himself.

Enraged that his son's work has been co-opted by anti-Semites, Robert's father plays a cruel trick on the couple, forcing them apart. But the two cannot forget one another, and they each determine to risk everything for the one they love.
