The world stood still on the 8th December 1980, the day John Lennon was assassinated. People simply could not comprehend how such a beloved musical and cultural icon could be taken so suddenly and in such a senseless manner.
In CHAPTER 27, first-time writer-director JP Schaefer attempts to unravel the mystery surrounding Lennon's death - much to the consternation of Yoko Ono and fellow Beatle Paul McCartney, who expressly asked that people not mention the killer's name for fear of giving him the notoriety he so craved.
Jared Leto (FIGHT CLUB, REQUIEM FOR A DREAM) steps into the role of Mark Chapman, the crazed fan who ultimately fired those five fatal shots at the former Beatle. The actor's shocking physical transformation (he piled on a whopping 67 pounds to play the part) is indeed remarkable, but it's his central performance as a man on the brink of mental collapse that won him critical acclaim.
The film's title is derived from JD Salinger's classic novel THE CATCHER IN THE RYE, which ends on chapter 26. It is the same book that Chapman was holding at the time of the murder and, he claims, holds the key to his actions.
