In Rainer Werner Fassbinder's film Angst Essen Seele Auf, (1974) a young Moroccan mechanic, "Ali," (El Hedi ben Salem) falls in love with an older German woman. The story takes off when Emmi, (Brigitte Mira) a widowed cleaning woman, is asked to dance by Ali at a local bar. Soon after Ali walks Emmi to her apartment home, a romance unfolds and leads to a private wedding. Even though their relationship flourishes, their age difference (Ali being in his late thirties, and Emmi being in her early sixties) creates a negative backlash from Emmis family and friends. This tension eventually creates static between the mechanic and the cleaning woman's matrimony as well. As Emmi begins to get more comfortable with her husbands presence, Ali begins to feel like an underappreciated trophy husband. Feeling depressed by not being served his favorite dish "couscous" and confused about his matrimonial decision, their unique marriage goes through the ultimate test when Ali embarks on the horrific actions of infidelity.
