Two Paris art dealers find it difficult to juggle wives and mistresses in Claude Berri's compelling comedy drama One Stays, The Other Leaves. A powerful script, smart production values and brilliantly emotive performances from a stellar cast including Daniel Auteuil, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Nathalie Baye ensure an all-round quality production.
Daniel (Daniel Auteuil) is celebrating 16 years of marriage to his second wife, Isabelle (Laure Duthilleul), together with their 15 year-old son, Cédric, and long time-friend, Alain (Pierre Arditi) and his wife of 18 years, Fanny (Nathalie Baye), when the phone rings. Julien, Daniel's son from his first marriage, has been badly injured in a motorcycle accident. The following day, researcher Judith (Charlotte Gainsbourg) arrives for an appointment with Daniel, only to find him over-come with grief at the latest news about Julien. Deeply moved by his distress and dignity, the much younger Judith calls Daniel days later, requesting that they meet. Over a number of weeks, their friendship turns into something more. Meanwhile, Alain is in over his head with his gorgeous, young Senegalese gallery assistant who wants him all to herself. Ultimately the men will have to choose between their wives and their lovers who will stay and who will leave?
