London at the turn of the century is a city of horse-drawn cabs, gas lighting, great wealth and even greater poverty… and it's a city of opportunity for scullery maid Louisa Trotter, who rises to become hostess, entertainer and friend of princes and kings. Louisa and Charlie's relationship becomes intimate for one evening, when Louisa takes pity on him after his lady dining companion leaves him. However, they do a bit more than break bread after Louisa gives birth to a girl nine months later.

A con artist, posing as a Baron, dupes a greedy American guest and seduces a lonely young bride, as a vigilant and intrigued Louisa monitors his every move.
