Medea

synopsis

Italian Pier Paolo Pasolini interprets the ancient Greek tragedy in his own distinctive style. Maria Callas,in her only film role, plays Medea, the central character in the ancient Greek story of Jason and the Argonauts in their quest for the Golden Fleece, and brings to the role her commanding presence in what is essentially a mime performance. To regain his kingdom, Jason is sent to Colchis to reclaim the sacred Golden Fleece. Gathering a band of mighty warriors around him, he sails to the primitive kingdom, where the infatuated priestess Medea, daughter of King Aeetes, helps him to steal it. Fleeing with the Argonauts, Medea demonstrates her true nature by butchering her brother and scattering his parts to put off the army dogging them; but this is only a taste of her wrath when later she is spurned by husband Jason in favour of the Corinthian princess Glauce.
