Valmont

synopsis

Based on the classic French novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, Valmont stars Colin Firth (Bridget Jones's Diary) and Oscar nominee Annette Bening (American Beauty) as embittered aristocrats who weave a wicked web of cruel intentions and savage seductions. Directed by Oscar winner Milos Forman, Valmont is a delectable thriller as well as a darkly amusing period drama. In 18th century France, the Vicomte de Valmont (Firth), a cruel and calculating playboy, makes a malicious wager with the equally wicked widow Madame de Merteuil (Bening): Valmont must dishonour the prim (and married) Madame de Tourvel (Meg Tilly) by seducing her. If Valmont succeeds, he will earn himself the privilege of Merteuil's bed. But when Valmont sets about his insidious task, the unexpected happens... he falls in love with his prey! And now Madame de Merteuil will stop at nothing to destroy Valmont's newfound passion.
