The Quiet Duel

synopsis

While operating on a patient during the war, army surgeon Fujisaki (Toshiro Mifune) contracts syphilis, a disease virtually incurable in 1940s Japan. Returning to the Tokyo hospital run by his obstetrician father (Takashi Shimura), he agonises over the threat the disease poses to his impending marriage, rashly breaking off his engagement, while simultaneously trying to save other patients' lives - including the man from whom he caught the disease.
