Italian Film Festival 2004: Disc 5 (The Cruellest Day / The Spectator)

synopsis

The Cruellest Day: On March 20 1994, RAI TV news reporter Ilaria Alpi and her cameraman Miran Hrovatin were killed in ambush in Mogadishu, Somalia. Their investigative reporting had brought them too close to a truth they were not supposed to uncover. The Cruellest Day is a powerful drama which recounts Alpi and Hrovatin's journey through a maze of gripping plot twists involving deaths, perilous investigations, and enormous sums of money, which culminated in a hellish international scenario that matches the greatest spy stories ever told. Giovanna Mezzogiorno (Facing Windows) delivers a charismatic and harrowing performance as Ilaria Alpi, and ensures that The Cruelest Day is never less than fascinating viewing. The Spectator: This striking first film from director Paolo Franchi is a hypnotic and richly compelling journey into the mysterious and melancholic world of voyeurism. Valeria (Barbora Bobulova) quietly observes the mundane activities of her neighbor Massimo through her window. When he suddenly moves to Rome, Valeria, without actually being sure why, impulsively decides to follow him. There she meets and unexpectedly befriends Massimo's attractive companion, Flavio. Valeria tries to avoid direct contact with Massimo, but as she evades his gaze, and keeps her distance, Massimo begins to be intrigued with her.
