Italian Film Festival 2004: Disc 4 (The Wedding Dress / My Brother In Law)

synopsis

The Wedding Dress:
Maya Sansa (The Best Of Youth, Good Morning Night) gives a lacerating performance as Stella Algeri, a twenty-five-year-old veterinary student who is engaged to be married. Her wedding plans are shattered, though, when a violent event changes her life. She calls off the wedding, quits college and takes up a job at a pastry shop. However, after passing the summer in sorrow, the coming of winter brings a new awakening when she meets Franco, the designer of her wedding dress. Franco's restless charm wins Stella's confidence and together they turn their backs on the past and make a fresh start. But when a tragic truth surfaces, the capactiy for happiness is once again threatened.

My Brother In Law:
A fast paced coemdy from director Alessandro Piva (The Head Is Spinning) teaming two bickering brothers-in-law on a seemingly hopeless pursuit. While gathered together for a christening, mild-mannered yuppie Vito (Luigi Lo Cascio) discovers that his new car has been stolen. He and his brash brother-in-law, Toni (Sergio Rubini) set off on the thieves trail. Toni, it turns out, already has his own trouble with a local gangsters. Lo Cascio and Rubini make an hilarious odd couple, and Piva's screenplay (co-written with his brother Andrea and Salvatore De Mola) keeps the action crisp, and the dialogue sharp.
