Tony Takitani is an adaptation of a Haruki Marakumi story. Alienated by his English name and from his own feelings of neglect of his father, a jazz trumpter, Tony Takitani becomes a skilled engineering draughtsman. One day he falls for Eiko, courts and marries her and knows happiness for the first time in his life-except that she has a compulsion to buy expensive designer clothes. Tragedy soon strikes and Tony is alone again. The somber and haunting piano score by Academy Award-winning composer Ryuichi Sakamoto ads to this exercise in melancholy.
