For some months now, a violent gang in Paris has been operating with complete disregard for the law. Head of the Judicial Police, Robert Mancini (Andre Dussollier), lays down a challenge to his two subordinates: whichever man captures the gang will replace him as head of the Criminal Investigations Department. And so the race begins between the head of the Search and Action Squad, Leo Vrinks (Daniel Auteuil), and the head of the Anti-Crime Unit, Denis Klein (Gerard Depardieu) - former friends who no longer speak to each other. They have different methods, different teams and different relationships with one woman, Camille Vrinks (Valeria Golino). But whose tactics will earn him the top job?
