Sons and Lovers

synopsis

A visual masterpiece, this is a sensitive tale of the damage caused by people to each other, in the name of love. Adapted from the autobiographical novel of D.H.Lawrence, a Nottinghamshire coal-mining town during the early years of the century provides a close-knit community where what the neighbours think is more important than your desires. Paul (Dean Stockwell) is a young man with a lot of artistic talent only prevented from following his father, Walter Morel (Trevor Howard), down the mines by his mother (Wendy Hiller). She is so concerned that he doesn't fall into the same trap that she did, with Walter, that she protects him from everything (although she lets another of her sons, Arthur (Sean Barrett), come home covered in coal dust). This subtle emotional pressure manifests itself in pushing Paul towards moving to London, to further his career, and steering him away from any meaningful relationships with women. The problem is that Paul seems to have found his soulmate in Miriam Lievers (Heather Sears), a young woman living on a nearby farm.
